Scope | The oceanic lithosphere/asthenosphere system (LAS) is one of the most fundamental features of plate tectonics. In recent years, the elucidation of the oceanic lithosphere/asthenosphere system has become one of the hot topics in solid earth science. New data from the ocean floor are being extensively obtained under the Pacific Array initiative (http://eri-ndc.eri.u-tokyo.ac.jp/PacificArray/) and others, and a great variety of views are proposed and discussed. In this session, we will discuss on observation technologies, views of the oceanic lithosphere/asthenosphere system, the strategies for interpretation of the observations (including seismic and/or electrical conductivity anisotropy), constraints/ideas on the role and abundance of water/melt in the mantle (including the transition zone), and other related topics for elucidating this enigmatic system. We call for contributions from diverse fields, including but not limited to seismology, magnetotellurics, petrology/mineralogy, dynamical modelling, and mineral physics. | |
