Coastal ecosystems are dynamic environment and rich in biota including microbial communities. Nutrients are one of the key components in aquatic coastal ecosystems that drive production and ecosystem functioning. Elements such as carbon and nitrogen are major players that determine productivity of aquatic coastal ecosystems. The distribution and residence times of various forms of C and N strongly control the structure and functioning of biotic communities such as archaea, bacteria and higher group of organisms in aquatic domains. This session intends to bring together scientists working in areas of coastal biogeochemistry in order to integrate current knowledge of nutrient cycling in coastal ecosystems with an emphasis on the importance of biotic communities which play major role in mediating key processes during nutrient cycling. Submissions are welcome from geochemists, ecosystem modellers, microbiologists and molecular biologists working in areas of nutrient cycling, particularly from tropical and temperate coastal ecosystems as part of this session.
