第25回IUGG学術総会の報告
9．IAMAS（気象）
IUGG総会期間中に国際気象学・大気科学協会（IAMAS）執行委員会が2回開かれた。今回の総会にはIAMAS日本代表委員の中島映至（東京大学）が所用で参加できなかったため，副代表委員の中村尚（ICDM；東京大学）が代理出席した。その他，IAMAS傘下の委員会の代表として，日本からは余田成男（ICMA；京都大学）と河崎善一郎（ICAE；エジプト日本科学技術大学）が参加したが，執行委員（member at large）の安成哲三（名古屋大学）は欠席した。
執行委員会の最も重要な議題は執行部の改選であった。任期満了となった現会長のG. Wu（ICDM，中国）に代り，次期会長にはA. Coustenis（ICPA；フランス）が選出された。初の女性会長となった彼女はICPAEからの初の会長でもある。ICPAEの活発な活動をリードした実績が買われたようである。副会長も改選され，J. Penner (ICACGP；米国)とJ. Turner（ICPM；英国）が選出された。事務局長のH. Volkert（ドイツ）は留任したが，執行委員5名のうち2名が改選されて，新たにD. Lu（IRC；中国）とC. Price（イスラエル）が加わり，安成とE. H. Berbery（アルゼンチン），V. Kattsov氏（ロシア）の3名は留任した。こうして，IAMAS新執行部は会長と副会長の2名の女性委員を含むこととなった。また，次回のIAMAS総会(DACA-13)は2013年7月8〜13日の6日間，スイスのダボスで開催されることが決まった。なお，DACA-13はIAPSOとは別開催で，共催は国際雪氷科学協会（IACS）のみの比較的小さなものとなる。
今回のIUGG総会ではIAMAS独自のシンポジウムが14件，IAMAS主導の合同シンポジウムが13件設けられたが，プログラム編成に工夫を求める声がかなり高まった。例えば，対流圏・成層圏結合変動に関連するシンポジウム３件が第２週の前半に集中したため，関連研究者は三つの部屋を移動して回るのに大いに苦労させられ，聴きたい講演が重なってしまったという不満の声がかなり聞かれた。また，ICDM主催の大気循環に関するシンポジウムとIAPSO主催の海洋変動関連のシンポジウムが第1週前半に重なったため，大気海洋相互作用に関心のある研究者も同様の苦労を味わった。一方，大気海洋循環の予測可能性に関するシンポジウムでは，参加者の見積りを誤ったため通路に座り込む聴衆で身動きが取れない状況となり，多数の参加者が聴講を諦めざるを得なかった。
なお，IAMAS関連シンポジウムで最大ものは，足掛け10日に及んだモンスーン・熱帯低気圧に関するものであった。互いに関連する二つの重要なテーマを同時に扱うことで双方のバッティングは回避されたものの，１週間しか参加できなかった参加者にとっては，どちらか片方のテーマの講演のかなりの部分を聞き逃したことになる。2007年のIUGG総会で比較的小さなシンポジウムが多数乱立したことへの反省から，IAMASは今回できる限り包括的なテーマでシンポジウム数を抑える方針を採ったが，これは些かやり過ぎの感が否めない。なお，当該シンポジウムが10日間にも及んだもう一つの要因は30分の招待講演を乱発したことであり，これに対する批判もかなり上がっていた。
