第25回IUGG学術総会の報告

 　IAVCEIの執行委員会は7月3日に旧メンバーの委員会が，5日に新メンバーの委員会が開催された。総会は7月4日に開催され，新会長に本大会の組織委員長であったRay Cas（オーストラリア）が，副会長にSteve Self（イギリス）とHugo Delgado（メキシコ）が新たに選ばれた。４名の新執行委員の一人に篠原宏志（産業技術総合研究所）が選ばれた。これによって来期は日本から前会長の中田節也（東京大学）を含めて２名が執行委員会に参加することとなる。また，2年ごとに授賞している「Wager Medal（中堅研究者）」と「George Walker Award（若手研究者）」に，それぞれAmanda ClarkとJosef Dufek（いずれもアメリカ）が選ばれた。また総会では，個人会員制度の修正や投票の仕方等について，規則・細則の改正を行った。

　会議の内容としては，この大会の直前にチリやアイスランドの火山が噴火し，火山灰浮遊の影響で航空交通網に支障が出たことを反映して，火山灰拡散や火山災害に関する講演で議論が活発に行われた。また，シミュレーションを駆使した噴火のダイナミクスなども人気のあるセッションであった。IAVCEIセッションには，ヨーロッパやアメリカからの参加が少ない印象を受けたが，IUGG総会としてはIAVCEI関係の参加者数は過去最大であったと思われる。
　2013年のIAVCEI学術総会は鹿児島市で開催されることがすでに決まっており，IUGG総会へ出席している火山学関係者にそのことを周知するため，鹿児島市と日本火山学会が会場にブース出展をした（●写真7）。展示ブースには，IUGG次回開催の立候補地，地元の研究所，出版社や企業などがあったが，IUGG傘下の8国際協会の中で，このような宣伝活動を行っているのはIAVCEIだけで，鹿児島だけでなくIAVCEIの存在をアピールする場にもなった。また，IAVCEIの総会に鹿児島市長代理が出席しファーストサーキュラーを配布し歓迎スピーチも行った。
