[FT-01] Cretaceous to Paleogene sedimentary facies and igneous rocks in the Paleo-Kuril Arc distributed in Eastern Hokkaido, northern Japan

Tour Details Turbidites and MTDs comprising submarine fan deposits of the Cretaceous to Paleogene Nemuro Group, fluvial and estuarine sedimentary facies of the Paleogene Urahoro Group. Pillow lava, dikes and sills of the Nemuro Group.

Tour Details Participants are going to trace the variation of deformation characteristics in extremely shallow (<1 km) and bit deeper (2-4 km) buried accretionary complex and trench-slope sediments. Also, we will visit liquefaction-induced chaotic sediments in a trench-slope basin.

Tour Details Taking walks with viewing stones used in the historical buildings in Nihonbashi area. Several of these building stones visited include well-known domestic products or overseas stone materials with large fossils or rare minerals.

We will visit Japan’s iconic hot spring resort, Hakone, and the symbolic Mount Fuji. In Hakone, we will explore the center of the 2015 eruption and discuss its eruptive process, as well as the mitigation measures implemented during the crisis. At Mount Fuji, we will visit a lava tube and geological outcrops located on its flank, where we will discuss its eruptive history and preparations for future eruptions.

[FT-06] The Geology of Nagatoro, Chichibu: the birthplace of Geology in Japan

Tour Details We will examine Jurassic to Cretaceous accretionary complexes and related metamorphic rocks in the Chichibu-Nagatoro region, which is commonly referred to as the birthplace of Japanese geology. The sites will include Sanbagawa metamorphic rocks, large limestone quarry, Mt Hodo and the related shrine.

Meals:Attendees should bring their own lunch for the first day. We will eat this outside close to the outcrop. The guides will be happy to advise on suitable places to eat in Chichibu for the evening of 2nd June. This evening meal is not included in the cost of the excursion.
