Scope | Maintaining the resiliency and sustainability of managed ecosystems to meet the food, energy and water demands for the growing population is a grand challenge. On the terrestrial landscapes, these ecosystems are large-scale interconnected system of systems with variety of actors, natural and anthropogenic feedbacks and interdependence, and spatial complexity. Developing assessment tools that integrate coupled human-natural systems response is essential for developing science-based solutions to enhance the resiliency and sustainability of managed ecosystems in the face of rapid global environmental change. Besides the vulnerability to climatic change such as frequent occurrences of droughts and floods, human activities exacerbate environmental pollution, which, in turn, impact or limit access to land and water resources. This session will accept submissions in critical areas of research that will enhance our understanding of the inter-dependencies of ecosystem functions and services in managed landscapes. We seek contributions that specifically address the impacts of sequential and compounding severe weather events on runoff and water pollution in heavily managed transboundary River Basins in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. We encourage submission based on works done in river basins, including but not limited to, Ganges-Brahmaputra, Indus, Tigris-Euphrates, Krishna, Cauvery, Mekong, Yellow and Yangtze in Asia, and Limpopo, Nile, Niger, Volta, Zambesi and Orange in Africa. | |
