Super Introductory JpGU Super Lesson (new project)

This is an event to support not only young students but also mid-career and seniors who want to study data and analysis methods that they have never touched before. This time, we plan to prepare into two classes: one for searching and analyzing satellite image data that can be used for free, and the other for exercises using Python.

Date JUNE 2 (WED)
How to join All attendees are welcome.
Please access the Zoom link provided at the Meeting portal.

Lesson Schedule
10:30-11:30AM Lecturer:Koichi Toyoshima (Center for Environmental Remote Sensing, Chiba University)
3:00-4:00PM Lecturer:Masataka Imai(Kyoto Sangyo University)

Interview event (new project)

The interviewer will sharply cut into the researchers who are active in the research front line, and will approach not only their research but also their stories and characters behind. This time, we will feature Dr. Nobuko Saigusa (National Institute for Environmental Studies), Prof. Huixin Liu (Kyushu University) and Prof. Yoshitsugu Kobayashi (Hokkaido University), who is also popular among elementary school students as a doctor dinosaur.

Lunchtime Special Lecture

World renowned scientists will present a series of Special Lectures in Earth and planetary sciences for students and early-career researchers across disciplines during lunch breaks (12:20-1:40PM) of the Meeting.
Date and Time 12:20~1:40PM
How to join All attendees are welcome.
Please access the Zoom link provided at the Meeting portal.
Lecturers One each from the 5 Science Sections will give a talk.

JUNE 3 (THU) 12:20-1:00PM

Lecturer Hrvoje Tkalčić (The Australian National University, Research School of Earth Sciences)
Section Solid Earth Sciences
Title The Earth's coda correlation wavefield: Rise of the new paradigm and recent advances
Topic In seismology, progress in imaging the Earth's deepest shells has been impeded by the lack of geometric coverage of body waves from large earthquakes. In seeking the ways forward, global seismologists started experimenting with seismograms recorded many hours after the first arrivals of body-waves. This contributed to the rise of a new paradigm – the correlation wavefield, the focus of my talk. The correlation wavefield is a powerful way to study Earth's deep structure, including its innermost shell – the inner core. As I hope to demonstrate in my review, the coda correlation studies may play a central role in global and planetary seismology in the coming decades.

JUNE 4 (FRI) 12:20-1:40PM
12:20-1:00PM
Lecturer Yukiko Hirabayashi (Shibaura Institute of Technology, Department of Civil Engineering)
Section Atmospheric and Hydrospheric Sciences
Title Progress and Prospects of Global Flood Risk Research
Topic With the advancement of earth observation data and computer science, the accuracy of global river models has dramatically improved over the past two decades. In this presentation, I will introduce the progress of flood risk research using such models, and consider what kind of information needs to be generated to promote adaptation and mitigation measures against climate change.
1:00-1:40PM
Lecturer Teiji Watanabe (Hokkaido University, Faculty of Environmental Earth Science)
Section Human Geosciences
Title For whom do we do GLOF research in the Himalaya?
Topic Glacial lakes in the Himalaya have rapidly expanded since the 1950s due to melting glaciers. This attracted world’s researchers to glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) studies in the region. Local residents have been threatened to see the field research teams. This happens because they have no feedback from the researchers. Through such observations in the field, I will discuss how researchers and the locals can/should address environmental issues in developing countries.

JUNE 5 (SAT) 12:20-1:00PM
Lecturer Keisuke Koba (Kyoto University, Center for Ecological Research)
Section Biogeosciences
Title Uncover the cryptic nitrogen flows in the terrestrial ecosystems
Topic Nitrogen fluxes in the natural ecosystems are difficult to study partly due to the high variety of the nitrogen compounds and to their low concentrations maintained by the biological nitrogen use. In this lecture, I introduce some case studies elucidating the cryptic nitrogen flows driven by the microbes and plants in the terrestrial ecosystems with the help of stable isotope techniques.

JUNE 6 (SUN) 12:20-1:00PM
Lecturer Shogo Tachibana (The University of Tokyo, UT Organization for Planetary Space Science/ JAXA, Institute of Space and Astronautical Science)
Section Space and Planetary Sciences
Title Chemical constraints on the origin and early evolution of the Solar System
Topic This lecture will explore present and future challenges of constraining the origin and early evolution of the Solar System from the materials science point of view. Keywords: cosmochemistry, extraterrestrial materials, star and planet formation, sample return, Solar System exploration, laboratory experiments, astronomical observation.
